The purpose of the Sustainability Committee is to work toward improving the health and vibrancy of the Sugar House community by supporting growth and other activities that enhance our quality of life while having minimal impact on the environment we live in. The overall goals of the committee are to support and promote the sustainability goals as identified by Salt Lake City in zoning ordinances and master plans. Committee goals also include community and business outreach to promote sustainability in terms of recycling, energy reduction, transportation, alternative energy, air and water quality, and house accessibility. We wish to promote education and exchange of information to help residents make decisions about their habits and their connection to the environment and community. Please visit our recycling guide and household hazardous waste pages under the current events section on this website to get more information. Also, if you have questions about businesses that promote sustainable products and practices you can consult the ReDirect Guide by clicking on the logo.

Sustainability Committee Report February 2010Announcement Sharing Backyards is an urban gardening intiative to connect those who have land for a garden and those who want to garden but lack that space. One of the biggest barriers to growing food in the city is access to land - despite the fact that many yards, lawns, and backyards have plenty of room to spare. Sharing Backyards links people with unused yard space with those looking for a place to grow food. If you have a garden and want to share it with someone, or if you are looking for a space to garden, Sharing Backyards is for you. To learn more, www.sharingbackyards.com and click on the Salt Lake Valley, UT link to network with community members who are willing to share their backyards or are looking for space to garden.
