Information on the Riparian Corridor Stream Study for Parley’s Creek

The City’s study of Red Butte Creek and Emigration Creek have been completed. The consultants are finishing the draft management plan for those corridors now. This winter, the consultants collected data for Parley’s Creek. They have assessed the vegetation type and coverage, and noted the location of any noxious weeds. They also studied the composition of the stream bed to evaluate its condition, an indicator of the condition of the stream as habitat. The consultants will use all of this data to establish a management plan for the stream corridor. Meetings to collect input from the public will be scheduled for later in the spring.

Report on Planning Process for Wasatch Hollow Natural Open Space - Helen Peters

Helen reported on the Wasatch Hollow Open Space Project. The purpose is to prepare an adaptive restoration, use, and management plan with Utah Open Lands Conservation Association. In the first round of public meetings, they set several fundamental objectives: provide public access; hire an environmental planner; set clearly defined boundaries; foster collaboration with stakeholders; protect the environment; and increase safety. According to the timeline, a report will be out soon. Then the planners will hold meetings for community input for developing management strategies. The consultants intend to complete the project and seek adoption of the Wasatch Hollow Plan by November, 2010.

Salt Lake City Open Space Lands Program is hosting a Kids Open Space Planning meeting for Wasatch Hollow on Monday, Feb 22nd, 3:30 - 4:30 pm at Foothill Anderson Library.

Introduction of Urban Village’s program for “Sharing Backyards”

Jim French introduced a new project by Urban Village. There is a long waiting list for people who want to have a plot at a Wasatch Community Garden site. This prompted them to look at alternatives, such as yard sharing. Interested residents can sign up if they have land available for gardening, or are interested in growing produce in someone else’s yard. Urban Village is partnering with Wasatch Community Gardens to promote the program. They hope to improve community resiliency, and help build neighborhoods. Introduction of RDT’s Green Map® Project for Salt Lake County

Ben Mates brought information about a project being proposed by Repertory Dance Theatre to help young people understand the concept of environmental sustainability and become involved in the life and health of their communities. Their website reads, through “place-based” education, inter-disciplinary activities and the arts, RDT will help students to create a Green Map© to identify places such as nature preserves and cultural centers in their community.

RDT will invite 60 schools, K-12, to map 16 cities in Salt Lake County. Lynne suggested that the members bring this project to the attention of schools in their neighborhoods, so Sugar House will be one of the communities involved in the project. More information is available at www.rdtutah.org/GreenMap2010.html

There was no news on the Fairmont Park or North Brickyard Park proposals.

Other Business:

Emil said the campsite under the Freeway overpass at Highland Drive had been removed, and ES Park is looking better than it has in the past.

The next meeting will be on the third Monday of next month, March 15th, 5 PM at Sprague Library.

Update on Imperial Park:

Would you announce that I am collecting donated books for a book-sale-fund-raiser for my park project. The sale will be sometime in April and I would appreciate ANY (ok... not the naughty kind) books that the council trustees or guests would be willing to donate. I'm especially in need of Children's books and Cookbooks. Anyone who has books to donate can call or e-mail me and I'd be happy to pick them up and store them until the sale. PS. We got our Federal 501c3 charitable organization approval this week in the mail. Yipee.... it only took 3 months which was a real surprise.
