A roadmap to Sugar House development Have you visited the website for the Sugar House Community Council recently? Sincerely, Christopher Thomas Chair
Sugar House Monument History Historical Committee
We hoped you enjoyed the first part of our series on Sugar House History. The second installment continues to outline the history of the monument as it has changed over the years. Even though this important icon has seen many changes over the years it has always been the heart of the Sugar House Business District.

After WWII, the Sugar House Business and Professional Women’s Club led an effort to maintain and improve the plaza and monument. For the state centennial celebration, the plaza was illuminated with new metal light poles. In June, 1947, a Sugar House Bulletin story reported that the plaza beautification had begun, and asked “Where’s the Plaza Clock?” A crosswalk connected the plaza to shops on the north side of 21st South. A granite bench was added, and in December, thousands of children visited Santa in his new Sugar House on the plaza.
The following year, a plaque showing the old sugar mill was added to the north side of the Monument. Another plaque, depicting fur trading at the Smoot trading post, was never finished or installed on the south side.
In April, 1949, Sugar House business and civic leaders organized an elaborate two-day festival to celebrate the installation of 142 new streetlights in the town center. Parade floats, marching bands and carnival rides whirled around the beautifully decorated plaza. “White Way Days” was the start of the annual Sugar Days event in Sugar House.
One feature that has since disappeared is the lighted, colored fountain that was added to the plaza in 1951. By 1986, the pools and fountains were gone, replaced with flower beds, brick-colored pavers, benches, and street trees.
