SHCC Message from the Chair

 Shopping local, shopping Sugar House

"what about copy print, over on highland?"

I had just explained to SHCC Vice Chair Judi Short that I planned to
have a book rebound at Fed Ex Office, formerly Kinko's.

And she was letting me know that I could shop local, in Sugar House.
Apparently Copy Print is not only closer, which will save me gas, time, and money, but it's less expensive, too.

If you, like me, want to shop local, but don't necessarily know every business in the Sugar House business district, you're in luck.  A recently completed a map of Sugar House businesses can be found online.

And if you--also like me--haven't yet had a chance to get around to your holiday shopping, join me in making a pledge to shop Sugar House.

For stunning and sophisticated flower arrangements, visit Trifecta, my favorite place for flowers. For fair trade world goods, try nearby Ten Thousand Villages. For books, you can shop small (used and new books at Central Book Exchange) or big (bookseller Barnes and Noble). And if you want to treat your loved one to a session with a chiropractor, check out The JointW
ant cupcakes? Try long time local Carol's Pastry Shop. A steaming mug of coffee or cocoa on a frosty night? Try Beans and Brews or Sugar House Coffee.

From gifts to restaurants, from well-known national stores to one-of-a-kind treasures, Sugar House probably has what you are looking for this holiday season.

What's your favorite Sugar House store? Let us know on our Facebook page.  In the mean time, Happy Thanksgiving, and thanks for shopping Sugar House.

Update from the City Council

by Soren Simonsen

December will be a busy month as we close out the year. Several notable public hearings are scheduled for December 6 and 13:

Animal control ordinance including, among other provisions, removing of household pet limits, preventing and abating pet nuisances such as noise and odors, and licensing of cats,

Accessory dwelling unit ordinance that would provide for the approval of accessory units to owner-occupied dwellings in single-family and multi-family residential zones,

Annual budget for the solid waste management facility (landfill) for Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County,

Interlocal Agreement between Salt Lake City, South Salt Lake, and Utah Transit Authority (UTA) to construct a two-mile streetcar corridor at approximately 2200 South between the Central Pointe TRAX and McClelland Avenue (1050 East) in Sugar House, and

Adoption of a final budget to construct a Glendale Branch Library.

The City Council is tentatively scheduled to take action in December to establish a 10-year Capital Improvement Program budget for city-wide projects, consideration for funding and finance of the Utah Performing Arts Center downtown, and issuance of $2,000,000 in voter-authorized bonds for open space acquisition.  To keep up with council business, you can find our agendas posted Fridays prior to council meetings. I welcome your input on these and other matters. Public hearings are held at 7:00 pm in the council chambers. You may also reach me by This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Salt Lake & Jordan Canal Trail

Parks, Open Space & Trails Committee

Salt Lake City is studying the possibility of a bicycle/pedestrain trail along the Salt Lake & Jordan Canal.  Public comments have been collected about this proposed project at open houses held throughout the summer.

An overview from Salt Lake City states "The Jordan and Salt Lake City Canal is an historic canal in the Salt Lake Valley, traversing the Valley from north to south. It connects the Jordan Narrows near Point-of-the-Mountain to City Creek in downtown Salt Lake City. This study will analyze the feasibility of a trail within the canal corridor, identify a preferred trail alignment and present steps for moving forward. The geographic content of the study is limited to the section of the canal between 800 South and 3300 South in Salt Lake City."

You can view a map of canal, read about the history of the canal and learn more details about the proposed project in order to submit comments via Salt Lake City Open City Hall.

Crosswalk Safety

Community Interest

As Sugar House continues to get busier everyone is concerned about crosswalk safety.  Many residents do not realize that SLC run a crosswalk sponsor program and it is your neighbors that sponsor individual crosswalks and try to keep them filled with orange flags.

If you or a nearby business are interested in adopting a crosswalk you can find more information here.  If  you are interested in finding out who sponsors a crosswalk near you please cal Dan Bergenthal at 801-535-6630.
