SHCC Message from the Chair

Hello, friends, neighbors, and families of Sugar House,

What a great summer in Sugar House! The Independence Day Street Fest and the fireworks in Sugar House Park topped a great effort from the Merchant's Association, local business owner Scott Workman, and major contributors that kept the fireworks alive. The SHCC salutes Mr. Workman, RC Willey, countless area businesses, donors like you, and Salt Lake City in their generous contributions. I hope your family had a chance to enjoy all of these great events. Next year, the "Sugar House Draw" tunnel under 1300 East will be finished, tying Highland Drive, Hidden Hollow, and Sugar House Park together with easy and enjoyable pedestrian access.

Last week, I gave a speech to the Kiwanis Club of Sugar House about the community council and the work the council does. I was a guest of club member and director of the Boys and Girls Club Julie Trujillo and Kiwanis club president Hank Kennedy. In my experience, such organizations - including the SHCC - serve as a vital base of social capital, the concept that volunteer organizations work to provide civic engagement, support, and interaction. I hope you take time to participate in creating social capital as well. It's an important role that Harvard University professor Robert Putnam  views as having been undermined in the past several decades, largely by television and its effect in privatizing our leisure time.

Salt Lake City will have its municipal elections for mayor and city council district 6, which includes a part of Sugar House. Be sure to ask the candidates about issues that are important to you.

This months community council meeting will feature a presentation about Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED), specifically about the integrity of Fairmont Park. You'll also learn some key points about ideas for your home and yard to keep your family and belongings secure. The meeting will be on August 3 at 7pm at the Sprague Library.

Keep cool, and enjoy the rest of a great summer!

Sugar House Streetcar Study Open House

Transportation Committee

Salt Lake City Redevelopment Agency will be holding an open house for area residents on Thursday, July 28, from 5:30-7:30 pm at Sprague Library.  This open house will focus on introducing Phase II of the Sugar House streetcar and discuss transportation goals and issues in Sugar House.

Phase II of the Sugar House streetcar will specifically look at where might the streetcar go from here.  What route makes the most sense, where do people want it to travel, what are the issues that surround those choices.

The Open House is an important function of community visioning that allows residents and concerned citizens the opportunity to voice their concerns and share specific transit needs and wants for our neighborhoods.   We hope to see you there.

Construction is scheduled to start next year so don't wait to get involved.  Keep up to date on the Sugar House streetcar study by visiting

You can also read more about the Sugar House streetcar and leave comments at SLC Open City Hall here

Jordan McClelland Canal Trail Study

Parks, Open Space & Trails Committee

In addition to the Sugar House streetcar the city is also exploring the possibility of a Jordan McClelland Canal Trail

Please join us at this open house to learn more about the study and share your thoughts and ideas. The City is studying a bicycle and pedestrian trail between 800 South and 3300 South at approximately 1050 East, along the Jordan and Salt Lake City Canal.

The canal trail would run through the heart of the Sugar House business district and there remain many questions about the best possible alignment where public input will prove vital.

The open house will be held at Sprague Library on Wednesday, July 27th from 4:30 - 6:30 pm.  We hope to see you there.
