SHCC Message from the Chair

Hello, friends, neighbors, and families of Sugar House,

When I mentioned that a lot is happening in Sugar House, I really meant it! Get a load of this:

• The fireworks are on! Thanks to last-minute contributions from donors such as RC Willey, Salt Lake City, Jamba Juice and The Joint the annual Independence Day fireworks are happening on July 4th.

• The annual Sugar House Street and Art Festival is also on the 4th of July. Look for the SHCC booth and stop by to say hello.

•The tunnel under 1300 East, Sugar House Draw, is under construction. Next year, visitors to our business district will be able to stroll or bike through Hidden Hollow right into Sugar House park-without ever having to cross the busy road.

• Thanks to the devoted, hard work of several trustees on the SHCC board and area business owners, we have a new map to feature the many businesses in Sugar House here.

• The new Deseret Industries is open for your business. I'm proud to have a great organization like the D.I. in our community, providing job help, thrifty clothing and toys for families, and encouraging reusing our belongings.

At our next meeting, we'll discuss the nature of affordable housing, plus updates on several projects happening in our neighborhood. Join us on July 6th at 7pm at the Sprague Library.

Happy Independence Day!

Cabot Nelson

The Draw at Sugar House

Parks, Open Space & Trails Committee

Safe crossing at 13th E. draws a little closer

Nearly ten years ago, Salt Lake City began the process to design a crossing between Sugar House Park and the Sugar House business district.  On June 23, officials from Salt Lake County, Salt Lake City and the Parley's Rails, Tunnels, and Trails (PRATT) coalition announced the groundbreaking for the Draw at Sugar House that will tunnel underneath 1300 East to connect Hidden Hollow to Sugar House Park.

This project represents a partnership of government, land owners and trail advocates to create a masterpiece of artwork and engineering designed by environmental artist Patricia Johanson.  The project is scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2012.  For more information about the Draw, visit the PRATT website here

Dirt from the excavation site is being moved to Sugar House Park to build a ramp for Parley's Trail to descend from 1700 East into the south-east corner of the Park. After the ramp is compacted, turf sod and irrigation will be replaced, and trees that were removed will be replaced at a two-for-one ratio.

Community Preparedness

CERT Committee

The SHCC recently organized a new CERT committee.  Its purpose is to:

  • Act as a liaison between the city emergency response structure and our neighborhoods to coordinate emergency readiness and preparedness.
  • Educate our community about the advantages of organization and readiness in the case of an emergency.
  • Continually educate ourselves and the community in emergency preparedness possibilities and the best practices need to mitigate the amount of damage and alleviate as much suffering as possible caused by an emergency event.
  • To achieve these goals we are working toward the following:

    • Create maps that detail all those with CERT training and a HAM operating license.
    • Organize each neighborhood into block or street captains, each representative will need to participate in order for this to be effective
    • Open a dialogue with the neighborhood emergency responders, i.e. police dept, fire dept, community health care providers, community stakeholders (churches and volunteer groups) and the city CERT teams. Act as a clearing house of information for these organizations, allowing a more complete community effort.
    • Continually educate ourselves and others about possible emergency scenarios and how to react to them.

We encourage you to get involved in this important committee.  If you are interested or need more information please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

    Sugar House Map

    Arts and Culture Committee

    The Sweetest Spot on Earth

Sugar House is back on the map, with a new downtown Directory and Walking Guide just off the press. More than two-hundred retail shops, services, parks, and public places in the historic Sugar House Business District are listed by address and marked on a color-coded map.

Historic buildings and public art works are identified for residents and visitors who want to explore the blocks surrounding the Sugar House Monument.

The walking map is the work of a partnership that included the Sugar House Merchants, the Community Council, and Westminster College, graphic designer Holly Adam, and Printers, Inc.

Copies of the new map will be available for $1 each at the Sugar House 4th of July Art and Street Festival.  To view the online version click here
