Hello, friends, neighbors, and families of Sugar House,

With the cuts to the federal Community Development Block Grants (CDBG's), Salt Lake City announced that it is ending its support for the monthly postal mailers for newsletters like this.  Given that it costs about $.50 per mailer for postage, printing, and time, multiplied for about 300 recipients, and run 12 times a year, this newsletter alone costs over $1500.  And that doesn't even count the mailers for the other community councils.

However, email is so much cheaper.  It doesn't cost the city anything and you get links to more information on our website.  So, if you're reading this in the monthly printer mailer, please sign up for our email newsletter by visiting our website at www.sugarhousecouncil.com.  The printed edition will soon come to an end, and we certainly don't want to miss you!

At our next meeting on June 1, we'll hear a proposal to redevelop the Sugar House Village at 1350 East 2100 South (next to the KFC) into a mixed used space.  As a part of our spotlight on small businesses, we'll meet the folks at The Expressive Bungalow.  These are remarkable changes and businesses that keeps our community a dynamic, evolving place to live.

UTA's recent streetcar open-house had a very successful turnout.  There were a lot of ideas for how the line should look and function, from the terminus in South Salt Lake all the way to McClelland Street right across the street from Fairmont Park.

Have you planted your garden yet?  A couple of dozen households have planted theirs in the nascent Sugar House Community Garden on the old tennis courts at 900 East and Sugarmont Ave.  Go check it out.  We're all proud of the work that Heidi Spence, Aimee Horman, and the Boys and Girls Club have done.

Welcome to May in Sugar House!

Chair, Sugar House Community Council

RDA Streetcar Study

Transportation Committee

  streetcar alignment

The first community visioning meeting was held May 12 at the South Salt Lake Columbus Center.  Attendees heard from UTA and the land use consultant to learn more about the current state of the streetcar plans.

Participants engaged in the discussion to let city officials know their views and concerns related to the upcoming Sugar House streetcar.  There will be more upcoming public meetings to solicit public comments in the next couple of months.  We encourage all residents to participate in this process so your voice is heard.

You can read more about the Sugar House streetcar and leave comments at SLC Open City Hall here

Sugar House - The First 100 Years

Historical Committee

SH HistoryStudents from Hawthorne Elementary recently completed a study of the historic buildings in the business district.  You can see their artwork rendering of our local history on a mural located on the east side of the Rockwood Studios (1064 E 2100 S).

Those wishing to take a stroll through the area can take advantage of the updated Walking Tour Guide to Historic Sugar House found at Sprague Library and the Rockwood Studios.

The SHCC Historical Committee has been very active collecting photographs and oral stories to document historic downtown Sugar House and the surrounding areas.  If you are interested in getting involved in this project please contact Lynne Olson This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
