Mayor Ralph Becker declares November 14th to be Sugar House History Days in Salt Lake City

WHEREAS, Sugar House was officially established in 1853 and is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Salt Lake City; and

 

WHEREAS, Sugar House has been home to historic buildings and places such as Firehouse Number Three, which was built in 1914, the Sugar House Station Post office, built in 1940, and was the location of Salt Lake City’s famed “Furniture Row”; and

 

WHEREAS, the clubhouse in Forest Dale was one of the few old Spanish Mission-style buildings in 1905 and the first structure in the state built specifically as a golf clubhouse; and

 

WHEREAS, Westminster College moved to its Sugar House location in 1911, becoming the first accredited two-year junior college in the intermountain west and now offers both undergraduate and graduate education; and

 

WHEREAS, the land once used for the state penitentiary was transformed into Sugar House Park, a regional amenity comprising over 110 acres of lush, rolling green open space and is a favorite venue for family gatherings, sports events and annual Independence Day celebrations; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1990 Hawthorne Elementary students worked to restore the Hidden Hollow Natural Area which is now a nature community park and outdoor classroom, rich in cultural and ecological value; and

 

WHEREAS, Sugar House has been home to festivals and celebrations including Turkey Days, Sugar Days and the Sugar House Arts Festival; and

 

WHEREAS, the beauty and sustainability of Sugar House continue to grow with upcoming projects such as the Sugar House Streetcar and the Draw at Sugar House; and

 

WHEREAS, This Old House magazine has selected Sugar House as one of the Best Old House Neighborhoods of 2009, recognizing Sugar House “for its astonishing selection of great homes and the community spirit that supports them;”

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I Ralph Becker, Mayor of Salt Lake City, do hereby proclaim Saturday,

November 14, 2009 as

 

                              SUGAR HOUSE HISTORY DAY IN SALT LAKE CITY

 

and encourage all Sugar House residents to preserve their own histories and the history of their community, thereby documenting and celebrating the past for the education, enjoyment and inspiration of future generations.
